Key Points:
The webinar opened with a trailer of a film Organic Rising featuring Ronnie Cummins and produced by Regeneration International. Ronnie was a passionate spokesperson for the regen. movement. His film is available to view online.
Those on the call agreed that regen. farming is the future. To start your journey Farming Secrets prepared a list of the 10 Must Do’s on their website. One of the most important is keeping the ground covered at all times.
A discussion followed centred around Q & As:
What to do with overgrown grass? Slash? Gerard Lawry of www.eaglerisefarm.com.au put a link to his preferred use of a flail mower
We discussed weeds and emphasised the importance of changing the ecological niche in preference to getting rid of the weeds. Helen mentioned the delight that Colin Seis and many farmers experience seeing spiders and other beneficial insects return to their paddocks when chemicals are not used. Gerard Lawry posted a link to video of his spiders
Ian Moss: Any plant thriving in an environment (often called weeds), has some competitive advantage over everything else trying to grow. Grazing management is our best tool usually Allow desirable species a chance to come back
Agree with Gerard re holistic perspective needed. Don’t be too quick to remove “weeds”. Solar energy captured by leaves –> root exudates to feed microbes that access/cycle nutrients + build SOM/water capture/cycling. Well-managed grazing, deliberate diversity and planned disruptions are key.
Comments: Thanks for the input, very helpful. Really appreciate this conversation! Thank you, excellent. Thank you all for the informative session. Thank you so much for this honest discussion… chemicals are a forever chemical according to some studies.
