This is the story about a block that we visited with Dr. Maarten Stapper and Kevin Hughes just after Kevin bought it in 2008. When we visited, virtually nothing had been done to the block after it had been cleared in the late 1950s. Vegetation was mostly bent grass, blackberries, bracken & rubbishy growth.
So what has Kevin done to the block to restore and revegetate it? That was what we set out to discover in this Walk the Talk.
Kevin tells Maarten that when they 1st got access he scraped up all the bushes and then sprayed the regrowth and blackberries with a minimum of chemicals. The only fertilizer applied was a bit of a pig manure compost, commercial compost and three or four ton of lime per hectare. Kevin also applied Petrik microbes four or five times to get the biology improved.
Keen to test the success of the treatment, he left a 100-meter strip through the middle untreated with the microbes to see what difference would happen compared to the paddocks he was working on.
What was the result of his experiment? We invite you to see the amazing results for yourself.
