Soil Superheroes in the Making! Empowering Schools to Lead the Soil Revolution

Driven by her deep passion for helping children understand the importance of soil, Bev Middleton launched a nationwide schools competition four years ago—and it’s been growing ever since. The goal? To inspire a generation of young “Soil Superheroes” who recognise the vital role soil plays in our food systems, our environment, and our climate.

In this engaging webinar, Bev walks us through the story of the competition via a PowerPoint presentation, showcasing how students are learning about soil through art, science, storytelling, and hands-on experiments. The initiative has reached more than 10,000 students across Australia—sparking curiosity, creativity, and a real appreciation for the life beneath our feet.

You’ll get a chance to witness the incredible range of student responses and the excitement it has generated in classrooms across the country. One standout moment: we’re thrilled to share Louie’s passionate video entry, generously permitted for viewing. We think you’ll agree—he truly embodied the spirit of a Soil Superhero!

    Attention Teachers and Parents,

Schools across Australia are invited to take part in the fourth annual Soil Week Healthy Soils Competition — a fun, free, and creative national competition open to students from preschool to Year 10, including homeschool and specialist schools.

This exciting opportunity encourages students to explore the natural world, discover the vital role soil plays in ecosystems, and express their learning through a wide range of creative and scientific formats — including artworks, experiments, videos, poems, posters, games, and more.

    Why Participate?

    • Inspires students to engage with nature and environmental systems
    • Celebrates creativity, science, and inquiry-based learning
    • Inclusive of all learning abilities
    • Aligns with curriculum areas such as science, geography, art, and sustainability
    • Flexible for individuals, small groups, or whole-class projects
    • Teacher resources and support materials available

    Prizes:

There are seven age-based entry categories, each offering:

    • $500 First Prize
    • $100 Second Prize
    • $50 “Shout Out” Vouchers for exceptional creativity, effort, or enthusiasm

The competition aims to inspire a generation of young soil stewards through creative learning experiences. Whether students are budding scientists, artists, writers, or simply curious minds, everyone is encouraged to participate and be celebrated.

Entries close 15th October 2025, so there’s plenty of time to get involved.
