In 2013, Charlie Massy completed a four year study on transforming agricultural change (transformative agriculture). Why did he do this at a mature age? Because he has been there and made all mistakes. Charlie interviewed 80 farmers in this thesis for his PhD. He interviewed traditional and mostly regenerative thinkers. He aimed to discover the mindset which had got them to change and move them from traditional practices to ecological and regenerative practices and thus building soil health ad lifting plant nutrition.
The result is a very important piece in the future of farming in Australia.
Tanya Massy’s presentation “Today’s Youth – Tomorrow’s Farmers” gives sound information for young folk or parents with potential young farmers. She relates her personal connection to the land and the changes that have taken place in her own family’s experiences. She calls for ecological, practical new farmers to be “bioneers” and transform rural agriculture from a sunset industry to a vibrant, ecologically sound and profitable future.
Tanya is currectly involved with Victorian Eco Innovation Lab (V.E.I.L) actioning new initiatives with food hubs to localise the food systems in SE Melbourne. She is completing her Masters in Agriculture Science at Melbourne University.
