Application of Peter Andrews’ Principles of Rehydrating the Landscape

Featuring: Ann Maslin, Charlie Maslin, Helen Disler, Hugo Disler, Jim Maslin

Charlie Maslin lives on a 4,200Ha mixed grazing property at Bombala. In this walk we focused on Charlie’s application of Peter Andrews’ principles of rehydrating the landscape; the increase in ground cover when he changed from set stocking and the introduction of goats to control weeds.

When Charlie started the new grazing system in the mid-199os, one-third of the property was bare. Ground cover is now measured at more than 95 per cent. This is despite the fact cattle numbers have increased to 1000, sheep to 10,000 and 1000 goats have been added for good measure.

Other outcomes from the innovations are increased native grasses, decline of weeds therefore less time spent controlling them, a 40% decrease in labour, better use of water and improved stock health.

Due to his practices Charlie has been chosen by Outcomes Australia’s Soils for Life program initiated by Ex Governor General Michael Jeffery who intends to build a network of 20 best-practice farms, study what makes them work and teach others to follow their example.

Already Charlie has held several field days to help others to learn from and to question what he has done.
